Thank you for all the responses to my SNMP queries. I am still in the process of going through all the information. However I thought I might clarify Riodata's position in order to glean some more advice. The initial product that we are developing is a cheap(we hope) Ethernet hub. We hope to be shipping it within 4 months. The first versions will not contain any management features. It was my impression that writing management station software would be a long and ardous task, with little hope of competing successfully against established systems like HP Openview. Therefore it was our intention to concentrate on implementing compatible agents in our hardware. However if there are development kits for management software then we might be interested in getting involved in this also. Regarding SNMPv2, there seems to be a lot of dispute over it's usefulness and acceptance in the market. The July 1993 issue of Network Computing (article by William Stallings) looked very favourably on it, and since the standard has been published I thought the matter would be a lot simpler. But it does look like implementing SNMPv2 agents would be more complex, and I think for the moment we will go with v1. Sincerely, John McDonnell. Riodata Communications, M.D. James Brennan.
