Hi gang,

Bellcore is in the process of defining:
a) An ATM based PVC service, called Cell Relay Service, and
b) An associated Customer Network Management Service, that is
likely to depend on SNMP.
The RFIs that appeared in the Bellcore Digest this month
are attached.

As a consequence of (b), we are looking at the SNMP-based
management of ATMpvc interfaces. This message is meant to
poll interest among you. In case of sufficient interest, we
can plan a gettogether during the Columbus IETF. We plan to
submit a strawman proposal shortly.
So, if you're interested in this discussion, pl respond
to me directly by march 7, if possible.

Att. - Specifics on ATM management
     - Bellcore RFI on Cell Relay Service
     - bellcore RFI on CRS CNM Service
----------------------------------------

Some specifics of what we are looking at:
- We plan to set up CRS CNM analogous to SMDS CNM. This would mean
that any MIBs for ATM interface management are
the same for all ATM interfaces, irrespective of whether they
are offered by a public network or are part of LATM. Let's
  call this the ATMpvc MIB.
- The public network may have MIB extensions necessary
for managing the public service. This is specific to the
service, and therefore enterprise specific and parallels
the purpose of the SMDS Subscription MIB.
- The same applies to any extensions on private ATM
  equipment.
- We like to reuse MIB modules at the physical layer
wherever already available (e.g., DS3 MIB, SONET MIB).
- Constraints on the ATMpvc MIB in our view should be:
  - it must be small,
  - it should build on the ATM Forum's ILMI where suitable.
  - extensions must be possible for ATMsvc,
  - The following functions should be considered:
    - VPC/VCC administration (max number of PVCs supported,
type of PVC (pt/pt, pt/mpt), etc)
    - VPC/VCC operational status
    - UNI statistics / error diagnostics
    - Possibly VPC/VCC statistics

REQUEST FOR INDUSTRY INPUT

PERMANENT VIRTUAL CONNECTION BASED ATM CELL RELAY SERVICE

This is a request for early industry input on a Permanent Virtual
Connection (PVC) based ATM Cell Relay Service (CRS). Currently, Bellcore is
working on developing proposed generic requirements for a PVC-based ATM CRS
and is planning to publish Bellcore's view of proposed generic requirements
in a Technical Advisory in 3Q93. Bellcore is seeking non-proprietary input
regarding users' needs and technical aspects of requirements from
interested ATM switch suppliers, Customer Premises Equipment suppliers,
interexchange Carriers, end-users, and other interested members of the
industry. Please forward all non-proprietary contributions, comments, and
questions by April 15, 1993, to:

REQUEST FOR INDUSTRY INPUT

CUSTOMER NETWORK MANAGEMENT (CNM) REQUIREMENTS FOR PERMANENT VIRTUAL
CONNECTIONS (PVC) BASED ATM CELL RELAY SERVICE (CRS)

This is a request for early industry input on Customer Network Management
(CNM) requirements for Permanent Virtual Connection (PVC) based ATM Cell
Relay Service (CRS). CNM refers to management capabilities provided by
public carriers to customers to manage their use of public network-provided
services such as PVC based ATM CRS. Section 13 of Bellcore document
TA-NWT-001248, issued in October 1992, contained Bellcore's preliminary
view of CNM generic requirements for PVC based ATM CRS.

Currently, Bellcore is working on developing more detailed proposed CNM
generic requirements for PVC-based ATM CRS and is planning to publish
Bellcore's view of proposed generic requirements in a separate Technical
Advisory, TA-TSV-001117, in 3Q93. Bellcore is seeking non-proprietary
information regarding users' CNM functional needs, CNM capabilities, CNM
Management Information Bases (MIBs), and CNM interfaces for customers
(SNMP) from interested ATM switch suppliers, Customer Premises Equipment
(CPE) suppliers, Network Management System (NMS) suppliers, end-users, and
other interested members of the industry. Please provide non-proprietary
contributions, comments, and questions by April 15, 1993 to:
