Marc, I agree that generalized merge is a research problem.   However, if the underlying protocol doesn't provide metadata that can be used to detect conflicts, there is no way to do the research.   Saying "don't do this obvious thing that will be needed in order to make things better" is a recipe for stasis.   We already have webdav.   If what we want is the feature set that webdav provides, why are we even talking about this?
