I am aware of the work done by the W3C's Web Payments Working Group, and
payto is orthogonal/complementary to these specifications.

The Payment Request API (https://www.w3.org/TR/payment-request/) is a
relatively high-level JavaScript API that deals with concerns such as
line items for shopping cards, selection of payment methods, and
management of shipping address information. All of this is completely
specific to Web browsers.

The Payment Method Identifiers spec
(https://www.w3.org/TR/payment-request/) only allows https-based payment
URLs and the "basic-card" method.

As suggested in my response to Adrian, payto URIs could be used as
another type of payment method identifier, if the WPWGs spec allows them
in addition to https URIs in the future.

There is nothing in these two existing specifications that would provide
or replace the intended usage of payto URIs, which is to uniformly
address destinations for payments (and optionally some parameters of the
payment such as the amount, sender's name or processing instructions)
across different payment systems.

Best,
Florian
