You are correct, we need to talk about how we properly obtain consent from
users to share this data with operators and researchers.

I think it is also unlikely that many people will of can give consent

However, I'm not sure we need this data from a large percentage of users
across the Internet. Getting this data from even a small to modest
percentage of users could provide big bennefits to both researchers and the
operational community.

So I would suggest that we don't go too far in this rabbit hole.


I think the stakes are too high to ignore this important issue, especially
if we want to change the status quo.

Even if the client just collects this data in a X day running log and the
user can optionally include the revelant log information with a trouble
report to an operator, or elect to share this data with researchers on an
ongoing basis.

That provides a reasonable starting point for a privacy model, while still
providing operational community and researchers access to the data.
