I'm not Nick, but if you look at the topology of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid [1], you'll see that it's partly built on top of general purpose connectivity and partly on top of dedicated fibre paths. That means that only some of the middleboxes involved are amenable to special-purpose configuration. Regardless of that, the draft is a carefully phrased description of an actual deployment, and I can see nothing but good in publishing it.
