I did some research, so perhaps we can take inspiration from:

... and then use shorter/longer throughout the document? Just to give an 
introduction to the reader who might not be 100% sure what "longer prefix" 
means?

... and I guess I just need to figure out some rule of thumb for myself to 
remember what shorter/longer means.
