Here is the deal: simply relying on group names in CATEGORIES won't work. 
If you have a set of vCards and have a "Family" group, and I have a set of 
vCards and my own "Family" group, well those two groups absolutely have to 
be distinct, particularly when address books/vcards start to be shared. 
i.e. if I were to send you my vCard with CATEGORIES containing "Family" 
your certainly wouldn't want me to suddenly appear in your Family group.

So a requirement is that there be a group "entity" of some kind with a 
unique identifier (not its name) that can uniquely identify its membership. 
Well that is a vCard with KIND:group.
