Another suggestion, if one used XML like tags:

<first>Barak</first> Hussein <last>Obama</last>

Then the string can be escaped into the name field. For those that don't 
want first/last, they just skip the tags. For those that only want 
first/last, they pull the text only within with first/last tags.
