I believe the other thing that happened is that Veronica and Archie paved the way.

I was using Archie as a client to talk to Veronica servers about 2 years before 
Apache and Mozilla were more than idle chit chat....

And this was on early Mac OS platforms....  Win and BSD etc were already well established in this area.
