I think I'm seeing some general consensus on this thread:

1) The extra tags (closing and key tags) are superfluous, but, no one seems very worried about squeezing bytes out.
2) Mal-formed serializations (of all types) should be rejected, not "fixed up"
3) Mismatched object-counts and closing tags should be defined as mal-formed, as should missing key tags.
