Hmm. So it sounds like if you change the file type of a file, then it 
looks up the default application for that extension and then looks for 
UTIs declared by that app. Does that sound right?

So to get things working I need to have an app that understands markdown 
associated with .md.

So much for markdown being so simple that you don't need a markdown editor.
