Attention Working Group Chairs:

This is just a friendly reminder about the early allocation process and what role you have as Working Group chairs.

RFC7120 outlines the rules for how the early allocation process works.

Please remember that this process should only be used according to criteria in RFC 7120.

We have noticed that many of the registrations get multiple renewals and are in the registries for many years.

Instructions for Working Group Chairs:

Step 1 - Request is sent to the Working Group chair by the editor/author

Step 2 - The WG chairs determine whether the conditions for early allocations described in Section 2 are met, particularly conditions (c) and (d).

Step 3 - The WG chairs gauge whether there is consensus within the WG that early allocation is appropriate for the given document.

Step 4 - If steps 2) and 3) are satisfied, the WG chairs request approval from the Area Director(s). The Area Director(s) may apply judgement to the request, especially if there is a risk of registry depletion.

Step 5 - If the Area Directors approve step 4), the WG chairs request IANA to make an early allocation.

These requests can be sent to iana@iana.org.

Renewals:

If the early allocation needs a renewal after 1 year, approval from both the Working Group chair and the responsible Area Director is required.

In rare circumstances, if additional renewals are needed, IESG approval is required.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you and have a great week.

Michelle Cotton
