Fine, it could also be done in separate steps. The approach I use takes
RELAX NG together with various extensions (in different namespaces) that
serve the different purposes. Only the RELAX NG part together with a
subset of the extensions are used for validating configuration data
while other extensions specify behaviour of the device (including
defaults), annotations etc.
