To finally bring this saga to close, while at BKK I finally got my
business AmEx entered and a short while later was on my way. 

It wasn't without difficulty, but I attribute that to whoever Verizon
(my USA mobile carrier) is partnered with in Thailand because despite
having strong signal I was getting lousy Internet performance, and a
timeout in the 2FA process for the card was awfully sensitive to the
poor data service.
