Having gone to school in Philly at Penn (University of Pennsylvania), I know a thing or two about this subject ;-).

First of all, an authentic Philly cheesesteak uses Cheese Whiz (not that white provolone stuff ...).
Second, an authentic Philly cheesesteak contains steak, cheese and optionally onions (none of that other fancy stuff ...).

The two traditional places to get an authentic Philly cheesesteak are still diagonally opposite each other in South Philly:

  *   Pat's (1237 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19147 [near 9th & Wharton]) - https://www.patskingofsteaks.com/
  *   Geno's (1219 S 9th St, Philadelphia, PA 19147 [between Federal and Wharton]) - https://www.genosteaks.com/
Both are open 7 x 24, so if you have a craving for a cheesesteak at 2am, you know what to do ...

If you don't want to go that far, Jim's on South Street is good:
