Hi Luis

Thank you – very helpful indeed.

There are some other attempts at simplification that I am aware of such as:
https://doi.org/10.1109/ITST.2011.6060066 “A layer-2 approach for mobility and transport in the mobile backhaul” from 2011

https://doi.org/10.1145/3229574.3229576A “New Framework and Protocol for Future Networking Applications” from 2018

There are of course other protocol choices we could make that are more end-point mobility friendly such as ICN or QUIC – these would all make excellent areas we could be studying as potential alternatives to the 3GPP view of the world.

All the best

David

Hi David,

Regarding your point on “The use of tunnels within the current solution which hides the true IP topology and makes the solution overly complex”, let me bring your attention to draft-zzhang-dmm-mup-evolution which goes in that direction of simplifying the current overlay.

Best regards

Luis

Asunto: Re: [6gip] IETF 118 Side Meeting

Hi Behcet

As I have requested, I would like to present on the alternative technologies to 3GPP standards that we, as an Internet community, could be considering for ‘6G.’

The specific cases that have been discussed on this list are:

  * The lack of mobility between different carriers both within a geography and across borders due to the current domain-bound 3GPP design
  * The complexity for consumers in moving between networks due to certain applications (carrier voice, carrier text) being tied to the provider and hardware/token based authentication (SIM/eSIM) being cumbersome
  * The use of tunnels within the current solution which hides the true IP topology and makes the solution overly complex
  * The lack of interoperability of some of the applications, most notably the operator voice and operator text services which are being rapidly replaced by Internet-centric OTT players

I believe we have an opportunity to consider how an I(E/R)TF solution could embrace the OTT applications and promote interoperability as an alternative to current 3GPP technology. Removal of IMS and promotion of true end-to-end technologies must be our first 6G goal as an Internet community – history shows how promoting openness and competition leads to rapid innovation and we are currently seeing a proliferation of non-interoperable OTT applications due to customer discomfort with the operator-provided solutions.

To that end, I’d like to open a discussion at the next 6gip side-meeting on how we can arrive at a strawman architecture for future 6G solutions that uphold the IETF goals of separation of application and network (the end-to-end principle), the use of IP as a narrow-waist to promote interoperability and the end-to-end security of all communications.

Whether that is best achieved in IETF, IRTF or a broader IAB study group I think would be an interesting debate to have at this side meeting.

I would therefore be grateful if you could allocate a slot in the agenda at the 6gip side-meeting for me to hold a brief presentation on these topics and garner interest in them.

Many thanks

David

Hi all,

We will have a side meeting at IETF 118 in Prague, on
Thursday Nov. 9 at 7pm or 19:00-20:00
For local attendees, the room is Palmovka 1/2
For online attendance, we will have Microsoft Teams link (to be posted online soon ).

The topic is AI/ML standardization status in 3GPP
Speaker is Tricco So from Oppo (some of you may know her)
The talk will concentrate on the current or 5G work but it is evident that it will be carried out to 6G.

We will have Roland Schott on site in the room.
We may also have Peter Schmitt, 3GPP CT Chair in attendance.

More info about all will be posted as soon as we have them.

Behcet
