Hi Again,

We just submitted a new document about address assignment in 6lo.

This is (in a certain way) a spin-off of the PASA documents.

As you may remember, there are less and less bits available in the flags fields of the EARO message.

PASA was using 2 of them. The latest version proposes a solution that brings it down to 1 bits.

This document present a more generic approach, for which PASA is a use-case, that does not need any reserved flag in the EARO option.
A new option is proposed, called "Generic Address Assignment Option" GAAO, in order for a 6lo node to make a request for an address to neighbor routers.

The main idea is captured in the following sequence:

    6LN                  6LR

NS(GAAO)
---------------->

NA(GAAO)
<---------------

NS(EARO)
-------------->

    Procedure According to {{RFC8505}},
   {{I-D.ietf-6lo-multicast-registration}}, or
   {{I-D.thubert-6lo-prefix-registration}}
   depending on the type of address.

NA(EARO)
<--------------

How the address/prefix is allocated is out of scope of this document. Could be PASA. Could be something completely different.

We plan to give more details in the upcoming meeting, but any feedback is welcome.

Ciao

L.

> Abstract:
> This document specifies a mechanism enabling a node to request the
> allocation of an address or a prefix from neighbor routers. Such
> mechanism allows to algorithmically assign addresses and prefixes to
>    nodes in a 6LowPAN deployment.
