Subject: I needed this.

I was rather under the impression that crafting systems give the player a sense of reward for collecting crafting parts without effecting the balance of the game. Until the player has all the parts they can't craft the dodad that actualy effects gameplay and you control when they get that last part.

Plus the player gets another (larger) sensation of reward when they finaly craft an item.

AFAIK TF2's crafting happens outside fo the gameplay, you are not actualy making hats while running around.

This is probabaly the right way to do it in an action game. You don't want to be inurrupting the pace and flow of you're action to craft something, so collecting during action and crafting, safely, between levels seems like the way to go.
