  The IESG has approved the Internet-Drafts:

  o "A Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4)"
    <draft-ietf-bgp-bgp4-10.txt>

  o "Definitions of Managed Objects for the Fourth Version of Border
    Gateway Protocol (BGP-4)" <draft-ietf-bgp-mibv4-06.txt>

  o "Application of the Border Gateway Protocol in the Internet"
    <draft-ietf-bgp-application-04.txt>

  as Proposed Standards. In addition, the IESG recommends to the
  RFC Editor that:

  o "BGP-4 protocol document roadmap and implementation experience"
    <draft-ietf-bgp-bgp4-implement-01.txt>

  be published as an Informational RFC. These four documents are
  the product of the Border Gateway Protocol Working Group. The
  IESG contact person is Joel Halpern.

Technical Summary

  This collection of documents describes the newest version of the BGP
  inter-domain routing protocol (BGP-4). The roadmap and implementation
  experience document is being advanced as an informational companion to
  the other documents.

  BGP-4 is a revision of the current Border Gateway Protocol, previously
  revision 3. The new revision fixes some minor problems that were found
  during deployment of BGP-3. The primary changes between BGP-3 and -4
  were to enhance the protocol messages, and mechanisms to provide the
  support needed to deploy CIDR.

  Correspondingly, the MIB has been revised to correctly reflect the
  behavior of the protocol. As before, the hooks for reflecting user
  policy are not part of the MIB.

  The application statement describes how and where to use BGP. In
  particular, the document describes the aggregation behavior of BGP-4
  in detail. It gives the rules for when aggregation is safe, and how
  it can be used. This defines the parameters for proper operation of
  the protocol in support of CIDR. The usage of the policy and path
  related aspects and elements of BGP is also described.

  The roadmap and implementation experience document shows that four
  independent implementations have been built and interoperability
  tested.

Working Group Summary

  The document reflects extensive discussion within the working group.
  They also reflect the implementation experience which has been gained
  with these protocols.

Protocol Quality

  These protocols are extensions of extensively implemented and reviewed
  protocols. BGP-2 was reviewed by a large team of routing experts.
  There have been significant changes since then. BGP-3 has been widely
  deployed. BGP-4 has been reviewed by the working group and the area
  director.
