Hi,

Apologies if this has been discussed in the past, I was thinking of one
additional 'wish list item' to consider: the use of (simple) interframe
compression. I don't know whether this is even possible while maintaining
compatibility. Especially since the very first line of the document says:
This document defines FFV1, a lossless, **intra-frame** video encoding
format, this might be a controversial topic to discuss.

The issue I see here is that for archiving scanned film, interframe
compression is probably not very useful, but it might be for 'born-digital'
material, for example screen captures or other computer generated moving
images in which large parts of the image are exactly the same from one
frame to the next. In that case, such interframe compression could be very
rudimentary, like simply signalling that a frame/plane/slice needs to be
added to the previous frame/plane/slice (i.e. a difference is encoded
instead of an absolute) Intraframe prediction like state-of-the-art lossy
codecs have (B frames, weighted average, motion vectors) would probably be
too complicated, provide little gain, result in IPR problems etc.

It might make FFV1 just a little bit more suitable as a 'universal' codec
for the archiving community if the share of born-digital material increases
in the future.

This thought was inspired by this post:

Kind regards,

Martijn van Beurden
