Hello all,

Please find updated Patience option draft.

In this version, we removed “multicast usage” and “observation notification usage”, just focus on the “unicast request usage”. This can make the semantics clear, don’t combine different usages. This can also avoid confusions and make the implementation easier. This change was based on offline discussion with interested parties.

Also we simplified the algorithm, just used two bytes to specify integers for the patience time. Previously the design was to allow very short time measured in mille-seconds. After some consideration and offline discussion, we tend to make it longer. Usually request and response should take some time, and all the default timeout parameters in CoAP are set in seconds. So it would make sense to design Patience measured in seconds, instead of mille-seconds. Client should have this level of patience.

Welcome your feedback on this draft.

Thanks
Kind Regards
Kepeng Li

Abstract:
CoAP is a RESTful application protocol for constrained nodes and
networks. This specification provides a simple extension for CoAP,
the Patience option. This option is used by a CoAP client to
indicate the maximum time a client is prepared to wait for a
response. The CoAP server should try to return the response within
   the specified time frame.

Note

Discussion and suggestions for improvement are requested, and should
   be sent to core@ietf.org.

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.
