Subject: AppleTalk II and OUI=0
Status: O

We found out that AppleTalk II is using an OUI = 00 00 00 in their
AppleTalk ARP packet.
This is going to give a problem with translating MAC-level bridges between
Ethernet and FDDI: the packets will come out translated to Ethernet 2
packets.
It seems that the Kinetics Appletalk I to Appletalk II router is not
capable to handle this transformation.
I do not know what was exactly agreed about OUI = 00 00 00 on Ethernet, but
one of two scenario's should be adopted: or you don't use that OUI on
Ethernet,or you accept that your packet gets translated.

We contacted Kinetics who said it was Apple's decision to use this OUI and
that Apple should be contacted (we will try that, but we have no good
contacts really).

I hope that somebody of the Internet community and/or the X3T9.5 is able to
have a serious talk with Apple: any candidate?

Joop.
