A merge is a rationale reason for more than 5 authors.

Processes in the IETF are based on rationale thinking.  I will present this viewpoint to the IESG in my shepherd’s report.    Be prepared that this IESG may not agree with this rationale for 5 authors.  If that occurs, I will come back to the author group for a request for 2 editors and 7 authors.

I write my shepherd’s report after we have gone through the 2nd WG LC.   Per IETF policy, I must ask for the IPR statement for the latest WG LC.

1. draft-ietf-idr-entropy-11

Please submit the draft-ietf-idr-entropy-label-12 with corrections.
We’ll start the 2nd WG LC after this appears.
Draft -12 should have 5 authors and must go through IPR statement.


The reason why the draft has more than 5 authors is because this draft is the result of the merge of two WG documents:

  *   draft-ietf-idr-next-hop-capability [1], which had 3 authors
  *   draft-ietf-idr-entropy-label [2], which had 5 authors.


As part of the merge, the list of authors has also been merged and now exceed 5 authors. (7 authors since one author was in both)


The reason for this merge of two drafts is because:

  1.  in a first step, the WG had adopted two solutions for the same problem (so-call “short-term” and “long-term” solutions) [3]
  2.  in a second step, we agreed that a single solution was better for the industry.



A priori there is a possibility to allow for more than 5 authors if there is a specific reason. Personally, I would say that the merge of two WG drafts would be a good reason because we probably don’t want to punish authors for working on a merge. That would be a precedent that would presumably not help future merge.



Would you be ok with the draft having more than 5 authors and justifying this in the shepherd writeup in the dedicated question?
