The IESG has approved the Internet Draft "Post Office Protocol -
Version 3" <draft-rose-pop3-01.txt> as a Draft Standard. This
document is a revision of RFC1225, a Draft Standard Protocol.
The IESG contact person is Erik Huizer.

Technical Summary

POP3 is currently a draft standard (RFC 1225) for remote mailbox
  retrieval.

This revision of POP3 replaced the optional RPOP authentication
scheme (which uses "privileged TCP" ports) with a different optional
scheme, APOP, based on MD5, shared-secrets, and challenge-strings.

Working Group Summary

This edit to POP3 consisted primarily of typographic corrections,
along with the change in optional authentication schemes. As such, a
  working group was not needed.

Protocol Quality

POP3 is extensively implemented and widely-deployed. The APOP
authentication scheme, while new, has been implemented in three
different packages for nearly a year.
