The IESG has approved the Internet-Drafts: o "Compressing IPX Headers Over WAN Media (CIPX)" <draft-ietf-pppext-cipx-04.txt> o "The PPP Internetwork Packet Exchange Control Protocol (IPXCP)" <draft-ietf-pppext-ipxcp-04.txt> as a Proposed Standard. These documents are the product of the Point-to-Point Protocol Extensions Working Group. The IESG contact persons are Stev Knowles and David Piscitello. CIPX ==== Technical Summary This document describes a method for compressing the headers of IPX datagrams (CIPX). With this method, it is possible to significantly improve performance over lower speed wide area network (WAN) media. For normal IPX packet traffic, CIPX can provide a compression ratio of approximately 2:1 including both IPX header and data. This method can be used on various type of WAN media, including those supporting PPP and X.25. Working Group Summary The protocol has been discussed and studied by members of the Point- to-Point Protocol Extensions Working Group. It is widely supported by committee members. Protocol Quality The protocol has been reviewed by David Piscitello, Internet Area Director, on behalf of the IESG. Comments submitted to the authors were considered, and corrections and additions have been introduced. The revised draft was been posted to the internet-drafts directories on July 20, 1993. There is at least one implementation of CIPX (although this is not a criteria for this protocol action). IPXCP ===== Technical Summary The Point-to-Point Protocol provides a method for transmitting multi- protocol datagrams over point-to-point links. This document is one of a family of Network Control Protocols for establishing and configuring different network-layer protocols. This document defines the Network Control Protocol for establishing and configuring the IPX protocol over PPP. The IPX protocol, originally used in Novell's NetWare products, is now supported by numerous other vendors. The IPXCP packets defined herein are used to choose and configure the IPX network-layer protocol. Working Group Summary There are no objections to moving this document to proposed at this time. Protocol Quality David Piscitello has reviewed this document on behalf of the IESG. Comments sent to the author have been considered in the preparation of the Internet-Draft noted above. There are several known implementations (having multiple interoperable implementations is not a requirement at this level of protocol action).
