Hm, after having re-read the abstract, I am not actually sure that adding the word “optional” brings you anything: pretty much the whole last paragraph states that as optional, as Chris writes, “…to permit…” and then “this allows…” etc.

I believe that the abstract does what it is supposed to do, i.e., calls out the documents that it updates and briefly summarizes the update. I do not see any overwhelming reason to stuff more words into it.
