  The IESG has approved the following two Internet-Drafts as Proposed
  Standards:

   1. SOCKS Protocol Version 5
	<draft-ietf-aft-socks-protocol-v5-06.txt>

   2. Username/Password Authentication for SOCKS V5
	<draft-ietf-aft-username-password-02.txt>

These documents are the product of the Authenticated Firewall Traversal
Working Group. The IESG contact person is Jeffrey I. Schiller.

Technical Summary

  The protocol described here is designed to provide a framework for
  client-server applications in both the TCP and UDP domains to
  conveniently and securely use the services of a network firewall. The
  protocol is conceptually a "shim-layer" between the application layer
  and the transport layer.

  The protocol specification for SOCKS Version 5 specifies a
  generalized framework for the use of arbitrary authentication
  protocols in the initial SOCKS connection setup. The
  Username/Password Authentication document describes a mechanism for
  using simple user names and passwords to authentication an
  application client to a network firewall.

Working Group Summary

  This document reflects the consensus of the working group.

Protocol Quality

  This specification has been reviewed by the Security Area Director,
  Jeffrey I. Schiller. for the IESG.
