The IESG has approved the Internet Draft "An Echo Function for CLNP
(ISO 8473)" <draft-ietf-noop-echo-02.txt> as a Draft Standard. This
document was reviewed by Network OSI Operations Working Group.
The IESG contact person is David Piscitello.

Technical Summary

This document defines an echo function for the OSI connection-less
network layer protocol (ISO 8473, CLNP). Like the ICMP echo, this may be
used to support diagnostic applications like (e.g., a CLNP ping). The
function is supported through the use of echo request and reply packets
specified in ISO 8473, version 2.

Working Group Summary

This document has been approved by the Network OSI Operations Working
Group. The major change since the Proposed standard has been the
selection of the "long-term" option as mandatory for support of an echo
function. This option is based on the packet formats specified in ISO
8473, version 2, to be published in 1993.

Protocol Quality

The protocol has been implemented and used in operational CLNP networks
across the Internet. The minimum criteria of 2 interoperable implementations
  has been met and exceeded.

Note to RFC Editor

The title of this document differs from the Internet Draft. The
title should be same as used in this protocol action. Please work
with the author to include a reference to the ISO 8473 echo request
  option in this document.
