The IESG has approved the following three Internet-Drafts:

 1. SMTP Service Extensions
	<draft-ietf-smtpext-extensions-05.txt>
 2. SMTP Service Extension for Message Size Declaration
	<draft-ietf-smtpext-size-02.txt>

for publication with the status of Standard. These documents are the
product of the Internet Mail Extensions Working Group. The IESG contact
persons are John Klensin and Harald Alvestrand.

Technical Summary

 The protocols form a framework for negotiating use of extended
 capabilities on an SMTP connection, and one particularly simple
 use of that mechanism, namely size declaration for messages.

Working Group Summary

 The WG reached consensus at Proposed, and no opposition has been
 raised after the WG's closure.

Protocol Quality

 There are multiple, interworking implementations, including PMDF,
 Sendmail 8.7 and SMail (patches).

 One area of concern, compatibility with non-RFC-821 compliant mail
 servers, has led to some differences in implementation of the initial
 EHLO exchange; experience from those who use EHLO aggressively
 indicates that the defensive strategy coded by some is not required in
 practice.

 The protocol was reviewed for the IESG by Harald T. Alvestrand
