A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories. Title : VENUS - Very Extensive Non-Unicast Service Author(s) : G. Armitage Filename : draft-armitage-ion-venus-00.txt Pages : 12 Date : 07/24/1996 The MARS model is our current solution to IP multicasting over ATM, establishing and managing the use of ATM pt-mpt SVCs for intra-LIS IP multicast packet forwarding. Inter-LIS multicast forwarding is achieved using Mrouters, in a similar manner to which the `Classical IP over ATM' model uses Routers to inter-connect LISes for unicast traffic. The development of unicast IP `cut-through' mechanisms (e.g. NHRP) has led some people to request the development of a Multicast equivalent. This document describes a hypothetical solution, dubbed `Very Extensive NonUnicast Service' (VENUS), shows how complex such a service would be, and asserts that analogies with unicast cut-through mechanisms are not entirely appropriate. It is also noted that VENUS ultimately has the look and feel of a single, large cluster using a distributed MARS - a problem space we are already tackling for other reasons. This document is being issued to help focus ION efforts, and optionally challenge people to prove its thesis wrong. Internet-Drafts are available by anonymous FTP. Send a message to: mailserv@ds.internic.net. In the body type: "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-armitage-ion-venus-00.txt". NOTE: The mail server at ds.internic.net can return the document in MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE" command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with "multipart" MIME messages (i.e., documents which have been split up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on how to manipulate these messages. For questions, please mail to Internet-Drafts@ietf.org Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the Internet-Draft.
