Sorry.  The reference I gave was to the later specification that split the DNS 
SRV usage.

The original design seems to have been in:

    A Common Profile for Instant Messaging (CPIM)
    draft-ietf-impp-common-01
    November 2000

I've attached a copy, since I can't find one through a Google search and the 
historical reference is worth recording.
