A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

Title : Experimental HTTP methods to support indexing and
                   searching
       Author(s) : M. Hamilton, D. LaLiberte
       Filename : draft-hamilton-indexing-00.txt
       Pages : 10
       Date : 06/13/1996

This document briefly outlines current approaches to indexing and
searching, proposes some experimental mechanisms which might be deployed
within HTTP [1] in support of these activities, and concludes with a
discussion of the issues raised.

The key features which are seen as desirable are a standardized way of
providing a local search capability on the information being made available
by an HTTP server, and a way of reducing both the bandwidth consumed by
indexing agents and the amount of work done by HTTP servers during the
indexing process.

Send a message to: mailserv@ds.internic.net. In the body type:
     "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-hamilton-indexing-00.txt".

NOTE: The mail server at ds.internic.net can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e., documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
      how to manipulate these messages.

For questions, please mail to Internet-Drafts@cnri.reston.va.us.

implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version
