The IESG has approved the Internet Drafts o "The Definitions of Managed Objects for the Bridge Network Control Protocol of the Point-to-Point Protocol" <draft-ietf-pppext-bridgemib-03.txt> o "The Definitions of Managed Objects for the IP Network Control Protocol of the Point-to-Point Protocol" <draft-ietf-pppext-ipcpmib-03.txt> o "The Definitions of Managed Objects for the Link Control Protocol of the Point-to-Point Protocol" <draft-ietf-pppext-lcpmib-03.txt> o "The Definitions of Managed Objects for the Security Protocols of the Point-to-Point Protocol" <draft-ietf-pppext-secmib-03.txt> as a Proposed Standard. These documents are the product of the Point-to-Point Protocol Extensions Working Group. The IESG contact person is Marshall Rose. Technical Summary These allow a network management station to monitor, configure, and control the operation of a PPP interface in a host or a router. Working Group Summary The working group, over the course of two years, evaluated several different approaches to MIB design. At first, an attempt was made to have a single MIB module be all inclusive: counting, monitoring, configuring or controlling every possible facet of the PPP. After evaluating this early version of the MIB, it was realized that the MIB was too big and cumbersome to be useful. The MIB was re-designed to include only those variables which are absolutely essential to managing PPP. Variables which "might be useful" or which were useful only in debugging implementations or which were used to configure PPP where there are defaults defined in the PPP specications were discarded. The end result is a compact, well-designed collection of four modules which the working group believes covers the essential elements of the PPP in regards to debugging network problems. Protocol Quality The Network Management Area Director has reviewed the MIB modules and suggested numerous small corrections. The Working Group incorporated these changes. At present, there are no implementations.
