Hello,

I've posted a new draft that defines a generic and common HBH and DO
option format for host-net signaling (host to network and network to
host signaling). The intent is to define an extensible format for a
wide variety of use cases of host-net signaling. The format has only
one byte of overhead, requires two option type assignments (a
modifiable and non-modifiable variant), and allows for requesting
signals to be reflected by receiving hosts.

Comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

A new version of Internet-Draft draft-herbert-hnsigopt-00.txt has been
successfully submitted by Tom Herbert and posted to the
IETF repository.

Name: draft-herbert-hnsigopt
Revision: 00
Title: Common Option Format for Host-Network Signaling
Date: 2024-03-20
Group: Individual Submission
Pages: 12
URL: https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-herbert-hnsigopt-00.txt
Status: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-herbert-hnsigopt/
HTMLized: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-herbert-hnsigopt

Abstract:

This specification describes an option format for Hop-by-Hop and
Destination Options for host-net signaling (host to network and
network to host signaling). The format supports a uniform mechanism
for sending signals and reflecting received signals back to an
originating sender. While this document describes a format for IPv6
Hop-by-Hop options or Destination options, the base format for
carrying signals is generic and could be the payload of other options
mechanisms such as UDP Options or Geneve options.
