Another small data point on toplevel media types can be found using the
XDG desktop files on Linux machines.  Here is a small histogram from my
Debian machine:

% grep MimeType= $(find /usr/share/applications -type f)|cut -d: -f2-|cut -d= -f2-|tr ";" "\n"|grep /|cut -d/ -f1|sort |uniq -c |sort -nr
    688 application
    344 audio
    235 video
    229 image
    101 text
     85 x-scheme-handler
     27 x-content
     26 chemical
     18 model
      8 inode
      8 font
      3 misc
      2 message

Note, these are not unique MIME types, but unique menu entries listing
the MIME type in question.  For example the 'misc' toplevel entry is
used by three menu entries all listing the misc/ultravox type, and the
inode toplevel entry is inode/directory listed 8 times.
