I asked this because during that presentation I opened a shell on my Mac
laptop invoked the Linux "base64" command to decode it, handed it that
string, and sent EOF. There was no output. If I add a base64 padding
character I appear to get the right thing:

msk@msk-mbp ~ % base64 -d
aGVsbG8gd29ybGQ
msk@msk-mbp ~ % base64 -d
aGVsbG8gd29ybGQ=
hello world%

Python appears to concur:

>>> base64.b64decode("aGVsbG8gd29ybGQ")
Traceback (most recent call last):

    return binascii.a2b_base64(s)
binascii.Error: Incorrect padding
>>> base64.b64decode("aGVsbG8gd29ybGQ=")
b'hello world'
