IETF IN THE NEWS

IETF rates itself 'minimally acceptable' on key measures of community, efficacy

The IETF, the open standards organisation that defines and develops internet standards, has surveyed its membership, and found that many of its key efforts are merely "minimally acceptable" – rather than efficient or inclusive.

< <https://www.theregister.com/2021/08/18/ietf_survey_minimally_acceptable_results/> https://www.theregister.com/2021/08/18/ietf_survey_minimally_acceptable_results/>

Running code at IETF by Geoff Huston

There was an interesting discussion about a proposal in a Working Group session at the recent IETF 111 meeting. Not unusual. But this proposal was that the Working Group should require at least two (presumably, independently developed) implementations of a Working Group draft before the Working Group would consider the document ready for submission to the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG). Before progression to publication as an RFC. What’s going on here?

Why phone scams are so difficult to tackle

... An international standards body, the US-based IETF has also developed new protocols to prevent robo-calling. In a nod to James Bond, the system is called "Stir and Shaken". US authorities have ordered mobile operators to implement the protocols by the end of 2021, but Ofcom says UK providers can't do so until networks are sufficiently upgraded, by 2025.

What is DNSSEC and Should You Use It?

... To address some of the security challenges with DNS, engineers from the IETF created DNSSEC. With DNSSEC, cryptographic signatures are used to validate the authenticity and integrity of DNS records.

The Best Authenticator Apps for 2021

... The codes are generated by doing some math on a long code transmitted by that QR scan and the current time, using a standard HMAC-Based One-Time Password (HOTP) algorithm, sanctioned by the IETF. These apps don’t have any access to your accounts, and after the initial code transfer, they don’t communicate with the site; they simply and dumbly generate the codes. You don’t even need phone service for them to work.

O que é e para que serve o IPv6? [What is IPv6 and what is it for?]

[Get to know e-mail, a pioneering communication tool on the Internet.]

Smart City Market Boom: New eco Study Forecasts Over 17 Percent Annual Growth

The future belongs to Smart Cities, as evidenced by the new joint study by eco Association and the management consultancy ADL. The study forecasts an average annual growth in Germany of over 17 percent, corresponding to an increase in revenues of over 46 billion Euro within five years.

Could making sensors visible build civic trust?

‘Smart cities’ have gradually developed something of an image problem – to some members of the public, the term invokes visions of a dystopian surveillance society and raises concerns about how their data will be used. That’s if people are aware of the concept at all.

ETSI launches new White Paper titled Fibre Development Index: Driving Towards an F5G Gigabit Society

Fibre and fibre-based optical networks are the key technical enablers of our society's twin transitions (green and digital), providing sustainable and cost-effective communication with high bandwidth, stability, reliability, and improved latency. In addition, the fibre evolution enables sustainable economic growth through advanced services and applications for users, businesses, and industries.

Q&A: Why the Metaverse Needs to Be Open: Making virtual worlds as interconnected as the internet will be tough

A vast digital mirror world accessible through virtual reality is just around the corner, if you believe the latest pronouncements coming out of Silicon Valley. This so-called metaverse has captured the tech zeitgeist and is attracting billions in investments. Last month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg even announced plans to turn his trillion-dollar social network into "a metaverse company".

Five ways that Open Source Software shapes AI policy

Open-source software (OSS), which is free to access, use, and change without restrictions, plays a central role in the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI). An AI algorithm can be thought of as a set of instructions—that is, what calculations must be done and in what order; developers then write software which contains these conceptual instructions as actual code. If that software is subsequently published in an open-source manner—where the underlying code publicly available for anyone to use and modify—any data scientist can quickly use that algorithm with little effort.
