IAB report to the community for IETF 116

The IAB has uploaded its report for the IETF-116 meeting to the proceedings in the Datatracker. In addition, I would like to highlight some recent/on-going activities:

Hiding behind MASQUEs

It has been almost a decade since Edward Snowden exposed a program of mass surveillance by the US National Security Agency (NSA), using the Internet for large-scale data harvesting. ... The IETF responded to these Snowden disclosures with RFC 7258, ‘Pervasive Monitoring is an Attack’, published in May 2014.

Intelligent IP Networks Open Vast Value-add Possibilities for Carriers

... Echoing other Summit participants, IETF IAB member Li Zhenbin made a strong case for SRv6 technology as a driver of higher-level network automation. “The new SRv6 technology is the basis for network automation and has received much acclaim in the industry. It has been deployed at more than 100 sites around the world and its related standards are maturing at an accelerated pace.”

"Principi Architetturali per la Quantum Internet" ["Architectural Principles for the Quantum Internet"]

80 is the New 50: Vint Cerf is at the Top of His Game: Internet Innovator Recognized with Marconi Society Lifetime Achievement Award

Vinton G. Cerf turns 80 this year and he’s busy as ever. As Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist continues his tireless efforts on behalf of initiatives and organizations that advance the beneficial use of the Internet, he is receiving the Marconi Society’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Cerf’s work will be celebrated at the organization’s annual Gala on October 27.

Scaffolding as Catalyst by Vinton G. Cerf

I have been thinking about scaffolding as I watch a huge new hotel and condo complex being constructed adjacent to the building where my office is located. It is a long process, starting with digging a deep hole that is braced around the edges by steel beams pounded into the ground and thick wooden slats between the beams to keep the edges of the hole from collapsing. ... In the early days of Internet development, the teams working on it made heavy use of the Arpanet, its predecessor, supporting Internet development with email, remote timesharing access, file transfers, and other applications. Once the Internet protocols had been specified and tested, the Arpanet scaffolding was taken down (that is, the so-called NCP protocols) and replaced with TCP/IP and suitable modifications were made to the earlier Arpanet applications to make them compatible with the new Internet protocols.

William A. Wulf, Pioneering Computer Scientist, Dies at 83

William A. Wulf, a pioneering researcher, entrepreneur and policymaker in computer science, who helped adapt an early Pentagon communications web into the network that grew into the internet, died on March 10 in Charlottesville, Va. He was 83.

Time Change as if by Magic: International Internet Governance Watches Over Correct Time

Who changed the clocks? When we change from winter to summer time at 1:00 UTC on Sunday morning, most devices such as mobile phones, televisions and laptops magically move forward themselves by one hour. Millions of electronic devices adjust the time, flight schedules are automatically changed and calendars are resynchronised without us having to lift a finger.

The UN Wants More Say Over the Future of the Internet. That’s Not Necessarily A Good Thing.

As if Internet governance discussions were not already convoluted, the United Nations has recently launched a process that attempts to place the UN at the heart of Internet governance discussions. While it may seem like a good thing that the nearly 80-year old intergovernmental organization is concerned about the future of the Internet, its initiative raises critical questions for the future of multistakeholder collaboration.

< <https://techpolicy.press/the-un-wants-more-say-over-the-future-of-the-internet-thats-not-necessarily-a-good-thing/> https://techpolicy.press/the-un-wants-more-say-over-the-future-of-the-internet-thats-not-necessarily-a-good-thing/>

SPF, DKIM and DMARC: what’s the situation with the .fr TLD?

Email is one of the oldest internet applications. It was conceived at a time when the internet was not yet a public network. Cases of identity theft using email are currently proliferating, since it is possible to fill in any address at all in the “From” section of the email, and this facilitates various kinds of abuse such as phishing. There are now solutions for plugging this gap, and they should be adopted in order to bolster confidence in email.

Improving the inference of sibling Autonomous Systems

Correctly mapping Autonomous Systems (ASes) to their owner organizations (also called AS2Org mapping) is crucial for Internet researchers. It connects AS-level research and real-world Internet events. For instance, in an Internet censorship event, accurately identifying ASes of government-controlled organizations is the key to discovering which networks conducted censorship (including blocking social media, shutting down mobile services, and so on) and further, estimating those affected.

Routing protocol implementation evaluation in fat-trees

Network design discussions often involve anecdotal evidence, and the arguments for preferring something follow up with ‘We should do X, because at Y place, we did this‘. This is alright in itself as we want to avoid repeating past mistakes in the future. Still, more often than not, it feels like we have memorized the answers, and without reading and understanding the question properly, we want to write down the answer.

IEEE IPR Rule Changes Fuel the Wi-Fi 6 Litigation Fire (Part 2)

Wi-Fi 6In Part I of this two-part article, we provided an analysis of the Wi-Fi 6 litigation and technology landscape. This Part II discusses important changes to the IEEE rules governing the reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) licensing encumbrances on SEPs held by participants in IEEE standardization work. Unfortunately, these rule changes fall short of clarifying what RAND means for Wi-Fi licensors and implementers. Instead, fueled by Wi-Fi 6’s growing valuation and adoption of heavily patented core technologies from LTE and 5G, the rule changes arguably will only heat up the current litigation trend.

Next Steps in IPv6 Policy Work

The RIPE Address Policy Working Group is organising interim sessions to plan IPv6 policy discussions at RIPE 86 in Rotterdam. The purpose of these sessions is not to develop policy proposals. It is to define desired policy outcomes and set priorities.
