IP addresses through 2023

It’s time for another annual roundup from the world of IP addresses. Let’s see what has changed in the past 12 months in addressing the Internet and how IP address allocation information can inform us of the changing nature of the network itself. Back around 1992, the IETF gazed into their crystal ball and tried to understand how the Internet was going to evolve and what demands that would place on the addressing system as part of the ‘IP Next Generation’ study. The staggeringly large numbers of connected devices that we see today were certainly within the range predicted by that exercise. Doubtless, these device numbers will continue to grow.

Four Quantum Technology grants for TU/e quantum projects

Quantum proof security systems, optical tweezer arrays, quantum key distribution, and quantum computers based on neutral atoms are the topics covered in the four TU/e projects funded within the National Growth Fund (NGF) programme Quantum Technology, carried out by NWO in collaboration with Quantum Delta NL. And the researchers from all four funded projects are part of the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute (EHCI), the TU/e institute driving innovative research in photonics, electronics, and quantum technology. The goal of Quantum Delta NL (QDNL) and NWO is to realize the much-needed scientific and technological breakthroughs in the field of quantum technology such as quantum sensing applications, quantum computing, and quantum networking.

3GPP begins Release 19 work for public safety as Release 18 progress continues

The 3GPP Plenary meetings took place Dec. 11-15, 2023, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Participants made continued progress on Release 18 (R18) features of interest to public safety. The Plenary meetings also included planning for Release 19 (R19) features, and the start of preliminary discussions for Release 20 (R20).

Inventor of NTP protocol that keeps time on billions of devices dies at age 85

On Thursday, Internet pioneer Vint Cerf announced that Dr. David L. Mills, the inventor of Network Time Protocol (NTP), died peacefully at age 85 on January 17, 2024. The announcement came in a post on the Internet Society mailing list after Cerf was informed of David's death by Mills' daughter, Leigh.

RFC 9490 on Report from the IAB Workshop on Management Techniques in Encrypted Networks (M-TEN)

Abstract: The “Management Techniques in Encrypted Networks (M-TEN)” workshop was convened by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) from 17 October 2022 to 19 October 2022 as a three-day online meeting. The workshop was organized in three parts to discuss ways to improve network management techniques in support of even broader adoption of encryption on the Internet. This report summarizes the workshop’s discussion and identifies topics that warrant future work and consideration.
