IETF IN THE NEWS

Bluesky is ready to open up

There was a moment last year when Bluesky — the weird, irreverent Twitter competitor with a decentralized twist — had captured lighting in a bottle. ... Bluesky controls the AT Protocol right now, and Graber is keenly aware that isn’t tenable if it’s going to be something lots of other companies build on over time. She says the plan is to eventually hand over control to a web standards body like the IETF. And as to whether her team plans to interoperate somehow with ActivityPub, she says it’s not on the roadmap but the company isn’t opposed to the idea.

< <https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/6/24062837/bluesky-drops-invite-system-begins-federation-at-protocol> https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/6/24062837/bluesky-drops-invite-system-begins-federation-at-protocol>

Bluesky opens to all, but can it really take on Twitter/X and Threads?

Bluesky, a new player in the social media scene, is opening its doors to everyone. ... On the technical side, while Bluesky may be the originator of the AT Protocol, the company may decide to relinquish complete control of it by transferring ownership to a standards body like the IETF. Bluesky may also decide to adopt ActivityPub, but Graber insisted that the so-called fediverse is still in "a time of experimentation" for now and that AT has a shot to be a contender.

Jack Dorsey-Backed X Rival Bluesky Drops Invite-Only Model And Opens Doors To All Users

... Graber acknowledged that it isn’t sustainable for Bluesky to control the AT Protocol long-term if it’s going to be a platform for other companies to build on. The plan is to eventually hand over control to a web standards body like the IETF.

< <https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/36973171/x-rival-jack-dorsey-backed-bluesky-drops-invite-only-model-opens-doors-to-all-users> https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/02/36973171/x-rival-jack-dorsey-backed-bluesky-drops-invite-only-model-opens-doors-to-all-users>

Bluesky is going open to public, the day is near

... Currently overseeing the AT Protocol, Graber is mindful of the need for a more sustainable governance model. The strategy involves transferring control to an established web standards organization, such as the IETF, to ensure broad-based adoption and development.

Bluesky removes the invitation system and opens to everyone

... Bluesky currently controls the AT Protocol, and Graber recognizes that if the protocol is to be used by many other companies over time, its control will need to be handed over to a web standards organization, such as the IETF. When asked if they plan to integrate with ActivityPub in some way, he states that it is not on the roadmap, but the company is not against the idea.

Twitter competitor Bluesky is set to launch

... Currently, Bluesky controls the AT Protocol, but Graber acknowledges that this is not a sustainable approach for long-term growth. The plan is to eventually transfer control to a web standards body like the IETF.

The adventure of Bluesky begins, the social network of the former CEO of Twitter that aims to beat X

... The next move, after the public opening of the service, will be the gradual activation of the AT protocol (now effectively controlled by Bluesky but in the process of being “handed over” to a Web standardization body such as the IETF) for third-party developers, which will theoretically allow anyone to create a server with their own rules.

Germany adopts strategy to prevent global online censorship, experts unsure

While the German government believes its international digital policy strategy, adopted on Wednesday (7 February), will foster bargaining power on the international stage while preserving democratic values and ensuring access to the internet without censorship, experts lament the lack of concrete measures. ... To ensure a free and secure internet worldwide, Germany plans to strengthen its commitment in multilateral platforms, such as the ITU, IGF, United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), ICANN and the IETF.

IP Addresses through 2023

Time for another annual roundup from the world of IP addresses. Let’s see what has changed in the past 12 months in addressing the Internet and look at how IP address allocation information can inform us of the changing nature of the network itself. Back around 1992 the IETF gazed into their crystal ball and tried to understand how the Internet was going to evolve and what demands that would place on the addressing system as part of the “IP Next Generation" study.

Don't hold your breath for Google's new Find My Device network

If you’re the type of person who is always losing your keys, wallet, and other accessories, there’s a good chance that your phone often goes missing, too. In some cases, it can be as annoying as losing it in between your sofa cushions. At worst, you could have no idea where it is while you’re traveling. Find My Device is a feature that Android device owners can turn to in times like these, but an offline finding feature that would help locate devices when they're off or offline has long been absent. Now, there is new insight into why this may be the case. As Android expert Mishaal Rahman explained in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Google has confirmed that it is waiting for Apple to launch its unwanted tracker alerts for iOS before rolling out its upgraded Find My Device network. Both companies — along with other industry leaders — worked together to develop the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers (DULT) specification, which needs to be chartered and finalized by the IETF.

Vint Cerf on AI's Potential and the Future of the Internet

... "The internet is not a single entity, but a network of networks," Cerf explains. Various organizations and groups collaborate to ensure its stability and interoperability. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the assignment of unique identifiers, while the IETF focuses on technical standardization.

La 'app' con la que Google quiere geolocalizar tus dispositivos perdidos se retrasa [The 'app' with which Google wants to geolocate your lost devices is delayed]

Interoperabilität: WhatsApp soll bald mit anderen Messengern reden können [Interoperability : WhatsApp should be able to talk to other messengers soon]

DNS and the proposed DELEG record

The Internet’s DNS is implemented as a distributed database. The structure of the database mimics the structure of the namespace itself, namely a hierarchy where each ‘node’ (or ‘zone’) in the distributed database has a single ‘parent’ node and some number of ‘child’ or descendant nodes (or none). The linkage points between zones (or ‘delegations’) are noted in domain names with a period (‘.’) connector between labels (but not exclusively, just to be confusing!). ... However, this is not the only pressure on the delegation mechanism. A second pressure is the incomplete work in the DNS Privacy Working Group. The use of encrypted transports, namely DNS over TLS, HTTPS and QUIC have been defined by the IETF’s DPRIVE Working Group, but the mechanisms to trigger the use of these encrypted protocols are unclear.

[Podcast] DNS is the new BGP — how we really route things in the modern Internet

In this episode of PING, APNIC’s Chief Scientist Geoff Huston discusses the role of the DNS in directing where your applications connect to, and where content comes from. Although this is more ‘steering’ traffic than ‘routing’ in the strict sense of IP packet forwarding (that’s still the function of the Border Gateway Protocol or BGP), it does in fact represent a kind of routing decision, to select a content source or server logistically that’s ‘best’ or ‘closest’ to you. So in the spirit of ‘Orange is the new Black’ — DNS is the new BGP.

Framing MANRS into the Mosaic of Cybersecurity

As announced in November, the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA) is now formally the support organization for MANRS. We’ve been busy working in the background, learning the systems, and appreciating all the help from the Internet Society as they guide us on our way. At an operational level, we hope there’s been nothing to notice as we’ve taken the reins approving new participants, managing the Observatory, and transitioning all the back-end details into our infrastructure.

A BGP Side Effect of RPKI

The BGP communities attribute, which usefully enables network operators to signal specific requests or information to nearby ASNs, also lets them signal RPKI status. But should they? Max Stucchi investigates the propagation of RPKI information in BGP communities.

Standards Matter for Cars, Plugs, Wi-Fi—and AI? Efforts are now underway to standardize development of responsible AI

Artificial intelligence holds much promise for innovation and progress, but it also has the potential to cause harm. To enable the responsible development and use of AI, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently released ISO/IEC 42001, a new standard for AI management systems. According to ISO, this standard “offers organizations the comprehensive guidance they need to use AI responsibly and effectively, even as the technology is rapidly evolving.”

What's up at the ITU?

Leo Tolstoy once wrote that "All happy families resemble one another; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." It seems possible that the same could be said for standards organizations. To illustrate this, let's consider what's going on at the ITU.

Amid spread of AI tools, advocates for new digital standard say it would help sort fact from fiction

Bundesregierung beschließt internationale Digitalstrategie [Federal Government adopts international digital strategy]

[The German government has adopted a strategy for international digital policy. It is intended to protect human rights on the Internet and to ensure access to a free Internet without censorship. To this end, Germany is to be represented more strongly than before in international specialist bodies that are committed to these values. In this way, the Federal Government hopes to be able to help shape future standards and norms for regulating the Internet, for example in the design of the sixth generation of mobile communications (6G).]
