The Standards Paywalls Fall: Everyone Benefits

... These judicial actions finally initiate a process of change which has been badly needed for decades. Thirty years ago, the emergence of new, industry-led standards bodies such as the IETF, ETSI, and 3GPP began changing how standards bodies function. Transparency was significantly increased, a broader array of participants was engaged, and the standards themselves significantly improved as they became freely available on websites along with code, with permanent URIs and well-versioned iterations that were subject to greater scrutiny and operational testing. As the standards-making ecosystems expanded to encompass new products, sectors, and participants, most organisations followed this pattern of success.

Chipolo interview: Bluetooth trackers, AirTags, and Google's Find My Device

We sat down with Chipolo’s CEO, Primož Zelenšek, and its CTO Domen Barovič, to talk about Bluetooth trackers in general and Google’s Find My Device network in particular. We discussed the delay — and Chipolo hinted that things might be moving in the right direction at the end of this month — as well as Google’s and Apple’s network strengths, differences, and why you might still want a regular Bluetooth tracker that doesn’t belong to any ecosystem. ... Q: Are you helping Google and Apple improve their standards based on your experience with regular Bluetooth trackers? Domen Barovič: We are lucky enough to be working with both major players here. Of course, we are sending in feedback all the time, we are an advisor in a way here. There’s also the Internet IFTA (Editor’s note: Domen meant to say IETF), a task force and standardization organization that helped build HTTP and we are a part of that as well alongside Google, Apple, and other parties. And we are proud and glad that we can contribute to developing the standard for this tracking, and especially helping the security issues in terms of unwanted tracking protection.

What is the IETF?

Welcome to another installment of our “DEFINITIONS” series, where we dive deep into the realm of technology and explain key concepts in simple terms. Today, we will be shedding light on the IETF, an essential organization shaping the internet as we know it. So, what exactly is the IETF, and why is it so important? Let’s explore!

What is the Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1)?

... Consequently, major security organizations, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the IETF, have recommended phasing out the use of SHA-1 in favor of more secure hash functions, such as SHA-256 or SHA-3. These newer algorithms offer improved resistance against collision attacks and provide stronger guarantees for data integrity.

What Is Bogon Filtering?

... The Significance of Bogon Filtering: ... 4. Compliance with Best Practices and Standards: Bogon Filtering is considered a recommended practice by network security experts and is in line with the best practices outlined by organizations like the IETF and Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). Implementing Bogon Filtering ensures compliance with industry standards and helps protect networks from potential security risks.

What is Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP)?

... RTSP was developed by the IETF as a standardized protocol for streaming media. It operates at the application layer of the Internet Protocol Suite and provides a framework for the negotiation and control of media delivery between a server and a client. RTSP works alongside other protocols, such as Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), which handles the actual transmission of multimedia data.

What Is Stream Control Transmission Protocol Endpoint (SCTP)?

... Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a transport layer protocol designed to ensure reliable and ordered delivery of data packets between two endpoints on a network. It was developed by the IETF as an alternative to Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

What is an Internet Standard (STD)?

... An Internet Standard (STD) refers to a protocol or specification that has undergone a rigorous and thorough evaluation process by the IETF and has been accepted as a reliable, interoperable, and well-documented specification. These standards play a significant role in ensuring that different applications and devices can communicate with one another effectively on the internet.

Do Routers Have IP Addresses If So How Many

... One of the most commonly used default IP addresses is 192.168.1.1. This IP address, which falls under the private IP address range specified by the IETF, is frequently used as the default gateway for many home routers. It provides access to the router’s administration page, where users can set up their network, configure security settings, and manage connected devices.

Measuring the Use of DNSSEC

The canonical specification of the DNS that is normally cited are the pair of quite venerable RFCs, RFC 1034, “Domain names - concepts and facilities”, and RFC 1035, “Domain names - implementation and specification”, both published in November 1987. However, these two specification documents are just the tip of a rather large iceberg. One compendium of all the RFCs that touch upon the DNS lists some 292 RFCs.

DNS is the new BGP

The classical model of the Internet (yes, I think the Internet is now old enough to have a "classical" model that refers to the original design and operational practices from some time back before, say, the year 2000!) was that you looked up the DNS with the name of the service or resource you wanted to connect to, the DNS duly returned an IP address, and then you opened an IP transport connection with that IP address. The quality of the service that ensued between you as the user and the service point was largely a network issue, which was influenced by the quality of the network path. That, in turn, was an outcome of the routing process. BGP was not just a reachability protocol, but also a traffic engineering protocol. Connecting customers to services was a BGP problem!

It’s the end of the line for outdated internet encryption protocols

IBC2023 Tech Papers: A Fresh Look at Live Sports Streaming with Prioritized Media-Over-QUIC Transport

Abstract: A QUIC-based low-latency delivery solution for media ingest and distribution in browser and non-browser environments is currently being developed for various use cases such as live streaming, cloud gaming, remote desktop, videoconferencing and eSports. Operating in an HTTP/3 environment (i.e., using WebTransport in browsers) or using raw QUIC transport, QUIC has the potential to revolutionize the media industry overcoming the limitations we face with the traditional approaches that impose TCP. This study explains the design methodology and explores possible gains with QUIC’s stream prioritization features.
