Ten years after: What’s changed since Snowden?

A draft has now hit its third revision, which I strongly encourage people to read. The memo draft-farrell-tenyearsafter discusses the aftermath of Edward Snowden’s 2013 revelation about the NSA’s activities, presenting the different perspectives of the authors. This draft has four authors: Stephen Farrell from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland; Farzaneh Badii from Digital Medusa; Bruce Schneier from Harvard University; and Steven M. Bellovin from Columbia University. It’s this mix of backgrounds that makes the draft so interesting. Stephen is the IETF’s Security Area Director concerned with reviewing drafts and proposals for their security context and risks, as well as the documents focusing on security as their main topic. Farzaneh is a human rights advocate, and Bruce is a cryptographer and a cryptography advocate. He was one of the people selected to sift through the cache of materials in the ‘Snowden Revelations’ released to the media 10 years ago now. Steven is an academic in cryptography and law and has also been a FCC commissioner.

Multichip multidimensional quantum networks with entanglement retrievability

Abstract: Quantum networks provide the framework for quantum communication, clock synchronization, distributed quantum computing, and sensing. Implementing large-scale and practical quantum networks relies on the development of scalable architecture and integrated hardware that can coherently interconnect many remote quantum nodes by sharing multidimensional entanglement through complex-medium quantum channels. We demonstrate a multichip multidimensional quantum entanglement network based on mass-manufacturable integrated-nanophotonic quantum node chips fabricated on a silicon wafer by means of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor processes. Using hybrid multiplexing, we show that multiple multidimensional entangled states can be distributed across multiple chips connected by few-mode fibers. We developed a technique that can efficiently retrieve multidimensional entanglement in complex-medium quantum channels, which is important for practical uses. Our work demonstrates the enabling capabilities of realizing large-scale practical chip-based quantum entanglement networks.

Comcast passes 100k remote PHY nodes milestone as DOCSIS upgrade gathers pace

... Comcast recently also launched what it claims to be the industry’s first low latency DOCSIS (LLD) field trials in collaboration with Apple, Nvidia and Valve. Comcast is planning to make LLD, based on a CableLabs technology standard that implements the IETF's Low Latency Low Loss Scalable Throughput (L4S) open standards, available to customers by the end of 2023.

On Internet blowback

In our Internet scanning experiments over the years, we have observed that some simple probes (for example, a TCP SYN or ICMP echo request) yield large volumes of packets in response although at most a few packets would be expected from the protocol specifications. We call this unexpected response traffic ‘blowback’.
