Some Random Notes from IETF 115

The IETF held its 115th meeting in London in November 2022. This was another in the set of hybrid meetings with specific support for online attendees in addition to the normal face-to-face meetings for the week. In no particular order, here are a few of my impressions from the IETF meeting.

Event Wrap: IETF 115

APNIC participated in IETF 115, held in a hybrid format from 5 to 11 November 2022 in London, United Kingdom. The event welcomed 1,661 participants. As well as the usual tracks, there was also a Hackathon and a Codesprint. View the agenda for more information.

Celebrating 35 Years of the DNS Protocol

In 1987, CompuServe introduced GIF images, Steve Wozniak left Apple and IBM introduced the PS/2 personal computer with improved graphics and a 3.5-inch diskette drive. Behind the scenes, one more critical piece of internet infrastructure was quietly taking form to help establish the internet we know today. November of 1987 saw the establishment of the DNS protocol suite as internet standards. ... Two Request for Comments documents, numbered RFC 1034 and RFC 1035, were published in 1987 by the informal Network Working Group, which soon after evolved into the IETF. ... Other major collaborative achievements involve the IETF, which has no formal membership roster or requirements, and is responsible for the technical standards that comprise the internet protocol suite, and ICANN, which plays a central coordination role in the bottom-up multistakeholder system governing the global DNS. Without constructive and productive voluntary collaboration, the internet as we know it simply isn’t possible.

ICANN Launches New RFC Annotations Project

Today, ICANN released the first version of its new Request For Comments (RFC) Annotations project. The purpose of this new project is to allow developers and security researchers to see commentary on the RFC documents from the IETF that make up the DNS protocol. The DNS-related RFCs can be viewed with annotations, such as updates to the RFCs and commentary on parts of the protocols.

CarKey: Autoschlüssel lassen sich nun mit Android-Smartphones teilen [CarKey: Car keys can now be shared with Android smartphones]

>From stricter reporting rules to a new cyber threat hub, the EU is upgrading its cybersecurity law

The European Union is set to make major upgrades to its bloc-wide cybersecurity framework for the first time in years. In November, the EU Parliament and European Council approved the implementation of a new policy known as the Network and Information Security Directive 2 (NIS 2.0). The framework will replace the original NIS Directive, which was introduced in 2016 as the first EU-wide cybersecurity legislation.

6G: Predictions for the network of the future

... Despite being in its early stages, experts predict 6G will offer higher frequency bands and flexible, cloud-based networking technology to provide unheard-of speeds up to 100x quicker than 5G, and microsecond latency. According to the 5G Infrastructure Association, 6G will bring ‘a near-instant and unrestricted complete wireless connectivity’, with the technology set to radically reshape the way enterprises operate.

Review of Internet of Things (IoT) for Future Generation Wireless Communications [International Journal for Modern Trends in Science and Technology]

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) emerged as a result of technological advancements that enabled efficient wireless tiny devices. This study explores the role of IoT in various fields, identifies technological challenges and examines opportunities offered by the IoT. As the Internet of Things and 5G transform devices into intelligent machines, the future of human life is dependent on them. A complete overview of IoT and 5G technologies is provided in this paper, as well as how these technologies have the potential to change the human perspective about the digital world. Communication requirements for industrial IoT (IIoT) include a high degree of reliability, low latency, flexibility, and security. A 5G mobile technology provides these services instinctively, making it a great candidate to support IIoT scenarios. This paper examines current challenges in IoT research and potential solutions related to 5G-enabled industrial IoT.

Data-center requirements should drive network architecture

If you like survey data, here’s an interesting fact for you. Every year since 2000, when I started surveying enterprises on the question, the most important factor driving investment and change in enterprise networks was the data center. It’s like the network is the tail of a big, fuzzy, maybe-largely-invisible dog, and it’s time we look at where that dog might be leading us.
