How Browser Innovations Are Taking On New Cyber Threats: Web browsers are at the front line against hackers, so how are they fighting back? [Google promotion]

In April 2021, Brendon Tiszka alerted Google to a security flaw in its Chrome browser. It allowed him to run an exploit known as a ‘‘sandbox escape’’, which helps enable an attacker to bypass security restrictions. To thank him for his efforts, Google paid him a cash sum: $27,000. It was the largest amount Google awarded that year for the discovery of a browser bug, as part of its initiative to reward those who uncover vulnerabilities in its products. But for Tiszka it was business as usual – because Tiszka is a bug hunter. ... In June 2022, the Internet Engineering Taskforce updated the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This is the means through which a browser connects to a server and receives a web page. Among many improvements, the update addressed browser security concerns through introducing new standards such as enabling encryption by default. This came as part of a growing emphasis on browser security across the tech world. There has been an uptick in startups building browsers specific to business use, for instance. And the biggest browser players are doubling down on their security efforts.

DMARC, DKIM, and SPF: Three Musketeers of Email Authentication

... In 2002, the first attempt at an SPF-like specification was presented to the Internet Engineering Task Force’s (IETF) “namedroppers” mailing list. In the past, SPF was called ‘Sender Permitted From’ and SMTP+SPF. In February 2004, the name was changed to Sender Policy Framework when the IETF formed a working group to develop email authentication standards (called MARID).

네이버, 검색·메일 등 전통 서비스 대대적 강화 [Naver, search and e-mail and other traditional services are greatly strengthened]

... 네이버는 자사 검색 서비스에 기존 대비 더 빠르고 안정적인 HTTP/3을 도입했다고 15일 밝혔다. HTTP/3는 앱·브라우저와 웹 사이 데이터 교환을 위한 3세대 표준 규칙으로 지난 6월 국제인터넷기술위원회(IETF)가 차세대 웹 통신 표준 프로토콜로 제정했다. 네이버는 2015년 최초로 HTTP/2를 도입했으며, 이번 HTTP/3도 국내 사업자 중 최초로 도입했다.

eu: Commission welcomes political agreement to launch IRIS², the Union's Secure Connectivity Programme

The Commission welcomes the political agreement reached today between the European Parliament and EU Member States on the Union Secure Connectivity Programme 2023-2027 with a budget of €2.4 billion. The programme aims at deploying an EU satellite constellation, to be called ‘IRIS²' (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite). Negotiations have now concluded, paving the way for final approval of the legal text by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

네이버가 국내 플랫폼 기업 최초로 검색 서비스에 HTTP/3를 도입했다고 16일 밝혔다. HTTP/3는 인터넷에서 하이퍼텍스트를 주고받기 위한 규약(프로토콜)이다. 지난 6월 국제인터넷기술위원회(IETF)가 제정한 차세대 웹 통신 표준 프로토콜로 제정했다. ‘/3’은 3세대를 의미한다. ... HTTP/3는 UDP(사용자 데이터그램 프로토콜) 기반 QUIC(퀵 UDP 인터넷 커넥션) 프로토콜을 쓴다. QUIC는 지연시간(RTT)이 제로(0)여서 페이지 데이터가 사용자에게 도달하는 시간을 줄여 준다.

It’s Official: The Leap Second Will Be Retired (a Decade from Now)

The time has come — or will come, in 2035 — to abandon the leap second. So voted the member states of the international treaty governing science and measurement standards, at a meeting in Versailles, France, on Friday.
