Build a 5G Open RAN test lab with open-source software tools

... Open-source activities play an important role because they enable rapid prototyping and verification of the specifications. Those specifications could still be in draft form. Many standardization groups have devised practices and policies to promote the use of open source. These groups include the IETF, guidelines and practices around “rough consensus and running code,” and the Open Software Community (OSC) of the O-RAN Alliance, which have implemented formal programs.

Apple is not blocking Google's Find My Device network and AirTag clone, no matter what Google says

... Google has said it won’t launch its own location tracking tags until Apple has a similar feature built into iOS. If the iPhone can’t detect unwanted Google trackers, then Google won’t sell them. It seems to be putting the fate of its tracking devices squarely in Apple’s hands, but in fact there's an organization in the middle of this standoff: the IETF.

More Encryption is the Goal: The Internet Architecture Board Holds a Workshop on Managing Encrypted Networks

The privacy and security benefits of network traffic encryption have become much more common through the adoption of TLS, the technology responsible for the security lock when a user visits HTTPS secured sites. However, as more protocols use encryption, points of friction for network operators are heating up and preventing their ubiquitous adoption.

Small footprint 3GPP 5G conformance test systems perform RF and radio-resource tests [Feb '24]

Rohde & Schwarz introduced two 5G RF and radio resource management (RRM) conformance test systems. The R&S TS8980S-4A is a cost-efficient single-box tester specifically for 3GPP in-band test cases. For in-band and out-of-band test situations, you can opt for the R&S TS8980FTA-3A, a single-rack system. Rohde & Schwarz claims that its systems are unique in that no other test system on the market offers similar capabilities in such a compact footprint.

Small yards, big tents: How to build cooperation on critical international standards

Technical standards can be easy to overlook. They are arcane, granular, and full of jargon. But as the world grapples with the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, mastering these details will be essential.

30 years of RFC 1591: Time to reflect on the policy gaps for ccTLDs

Since the times of Rod Beckstrom, ICANN has stayed far away from mainstream religion. There is, however, one document that acquired a quasi-religious status: RFC 1591. This month, this document turned 30 years old. Titled "Domain Name System Structure and Delegation”, it established the DNS as a global, distributed, and scalable system for managing domain names. By setting the foundational policies for top level domain name registration and delegation, it has significantly contributed to the stability and functionality of the internet. Most importantly for ccTLDs, it truly globalised the DNS by allowing policies for each ccTLD to be set locally and therefore be adapted to local needs and regulations.

Generative AI and CS Education: Increased knowledge sharing is helping CS educators and researchers accelerate change in computing education.

I have spent most of my career working on computer science (CS) education whether teaching undergraduate CS or managing technical education for software engineers at Google. In the early 1990s, when Pascal was the language of choice, I began teaching CS1 and CS2 at Stanford. Over the next few years, I saw the transition from Pascal to C to object-oriented programming. I also saw the pace at which we had to consistently update our course materials and projects, whether it was in the introductory courses or later electives such as graphics or compilers. Languages, software frameworks, libraries, APIs, and so forth change rapidly.
