Dear NMOP,

We have just submitted a new individual Internet-Draft, it describes an experimental approach to map IETF device YANG models to vendor-native YANG models using an off-box translation function.

The main motivation is to reduce the integration burden in multi-vendor automation environments. While IETF device models provide a stable and vendor-agnostic interface, many devices expose only proprietary YANG models, which differ significantly across vendors, platforms, and software releases. This creates high implementation and maintenance cost for operators and integrators.

The draft reports on an experimental implementation and discusses translation techniques such as declarative mapping, value conversion, structural transformation, and the use of YANG augments where needed. It also outlines how this approach can support multiple vendors and releases while preserving common service logic.

We would greatly appreciate any feedback, comments, or suggestions from the working group. During the IETF 127 Hackathon we intend to further expand the experiment’s vendor and model coverage and we welcome your participation!

Thank you in advance for your time and valuable feedback.

Kindest regards,

Ian Farrer and Kris Lambrechts

Abstract:

This document describes an experimental implementation of a YANG to
YANG translation function layer providing a northbound interface for
configuring networking devices using a set of IETF 'device' YANG
modules. The southbound interface of the function implements the
proprietary, vendor YANG modules which are implemented natively on
devices to be configured. The expected benefits of such an approach
are the ability to provide a stable, standardised, and vendor/device
agnostic interface for the configuration and maintenance of devices.
The main purposes for this experiment is to validate the overall
approach, and to identify, and describe the different YANG-to-YANG
translation techniques that can be used.
