At IETF 114, we had a side meeting on Green Networking and thought that the recipe mailer would be a good place to have further discussions on this topic. In this spirit, here are the minutes from that side meeting. Please send any comments, corrections, additions to the list. Thanks!

Agenda: No agenda but informal discussion concerning the three drafts: Challenges and Opportunities in Green Networking (draft-cx-green-ps); Green Networking Metrics (draft-cs-green-metrics); IETF and Energy - An Overview (draft-eckert-ietf-and-energy-overview.

Minutes:

Minutes are in no particular order, written from memory to reflect some of the more noteworthy points that were raised:

- Generally the drafts have been well received

- Revisited intent to present in NMRG (for research questions) and OPSAWG (for metrics, more immediately actionable)

- It would be good to include specific use cases and scenarios. This may help "focus" the work for any specific contributions and help diffuse issues with the scope being too large. This may also result in more actionable specific items. It is not clear if the best place to specify this is in existing drafts or in separate drafts (which the existing drafts refer to).

- Authors need to be clear that Challenges and Opportunities draft does not propose solutions, nor advocates addressing all of those challenges and opportunities, but that it is merely framing the problem space - perhaps an attempt to map a part of the ocean, but not to boil it.

- Clearly address and acknowledge issues with conflicting goals, e.g. do not sacrifice resilience/redundancy for energy efficiency although it will be good to be able to quantify its cost be able to articulate where consolidation makes sense.

- We may want to reconsider the terminology. Should it be "green", or "sustainable", or something else?

- Jari Arkko mentioned that an IAB workshop is being planned for next year on the topic of sustainability and networking. This may be an opportunity at which to present our work.

- We may want to consider including aspects related to energy sources and environmental factors. For example, differentiate between segments of the network powered by clean energy versus not, include heating / ventilation in the energy metrics (including possibly things like ambient temperature that effect current consumption).

- The question was raised whether to suggest IETF give general guidance - e.g. for IETF documents should include sustainability considerations (similar to security considerations), and/or whether a "sustainability considerations" document should be written for IETF - providing general advice for how to not make the energy / sustainability problem worse (Nick Doty)

- The suggestion of another side meeting in London was floated. Prof Laurent Metzger from Ostschweizer Fachhochschule indicated interest in presenting on their work.

- For further discussions, it was suggested to use the recipe@ietf.org<mailto:recipe@ietf.org<mailto:recipe@ietf.org%3cmailto:recipe@ietf.org>> mailer. In addition, discussions will take place at the nmrg and opsawg mailers.
