Looks pretty much equivalent to me (as far as this discussion is
concerned):

wget -O - ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1068.txt | mail $USER

or

wget -O $HOME/rfc/rfc1068.txt ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1068.txt

etc.
