We’ve had a mechanism for targeting multiple components for a long time (set-component-index => True). However, this falls flat in systems where components are not processed homogeneously. In a system that must download, then install two components, the installation component is not the same as the download component, so (set-component-index => True) does not work. This scenario has 4 components.

After some discussion, Koen and I have arrived at the option of adding a different mechanism to set a component index:

set-component-index => [ +uint ]

This would only apply to systems that support 3 or more components or 3 or more dependencies.

The encoding is smaller for all cases of selecting 2 or more elements. I don’t believe that there is substantial overhead for supporting this in the parser once set-component-index => True is also supported.

I think that the text for set-component-index => True is broadly applicable for set-component-index => [ +uint ]. I would suggest making support for this feature REQUIRED for any system supporting 3 or more components and/or 3 or more dependencies.

I would like to discuss this at the SUIT WG.

Best Regards,
Brendan
